   “DEVELOPING AND LEADING DISCIPLES INTO SPIRITUAL EXCELLENCE”!  I would like to remind you that in African-American History there are countless events and people that exhibit excellence.  I think of people like George Washington Carver, (that intellectual giant from Tuskegee) who through his tireless work in research, discovered hundreds of uses for the peanut.  While there are others in the past, there are many in the present, such as YOURSELF, who have made a commitment towards excellence.  We have a 2,000 year plus history of being a true and courageous people.  DID YOU KNOW?  Here are a few facts from our African American history: Lincoln University in Oxford, Pennsylvania, became the first degree-granting historically black university in 1854. Now, the U.S. has 106, including Florida A&M University in Tallahassee, North Carolina Central University in Durham, Johnson C. Smith University in Charlotte, North Carolina A&T University in Greensboro and Howard University in Washington.  The first black astronaut was Robert Henry Lawrence, Jr., but he died before he could travel to space. The first black astronaut in space was Guion Bluford in 1983.  And this fact is VERY important: Potato chips were invented by a black man. In 1853, a restaurant customer sent his French fries back to the kitchen because they were too thick. The chef, George Crum, cut a bunch of potatoes as thin as he could, fried them crisp in anger and, voila, the potato chip was born! The golf tee, gas mask and modern blood bank were also invented by African Americans. (Parents give some time even as we close out February African American History month to educate our children and youth because if you don’t our schools won’t!
